In these unprecedented times, being without a job can be more stressful than ever before. An even larger issue is that not only are you in this position but hundreds of thousands of others are as well. This can seem like a very daunting task, but there is one important thing to always keep in mind, you need to stand out from everybody else in this highly competitive job market. While this seems like an easy idea, making it happen can be much more difficult. So, with that in mind, here is a couple of simple things that you can do to help you stand out from the crowd.
The most important thing that you can do when applying to a position is to target your resume to that position. The easy thing to do is to use the same resume and push it out to as many jobs as possible, unfortunately, this will result in minimal results with even smaller returns. By targeting your skills and experiences to the job position, you will demonstrate to your potential employer that you are driven, determined, and detail orientated.
While working on targeting your resume, do not skimp out on the importance of a well-crafted cover letter. While only about ten percent of applicants include a cover letter when applying for a job online, those ten percent are usually viewed by potential employers. The reasoning behind why not more people develop cover letters is that it is time-consuming. At times it can be much easier to cater to your resume than it can be developing a cover letter. By again targeting your resume and now your cover letter to the position it demonstrates your communication skills, your interpersonal skills and it acts as your first introduction.
While a cover letter acts as your first introduction to your potential employer, your online profile can act as a deep dive into who you are. While you may think that employers don’t look you up online, they do. Before you click send on your newly crafted resume and cover letter, spend a day, and review all your social media channels. Using your channels to further enhance what you have demonstrated on your resume and cover letter will help further establish you and help you truly stand out from the crowd.
