The last type of resume we will be looking at is the Targeted resume. As the name implies a Targeted resume is only delivering information that is directly relevant to the application. This style of resume tends to be on the shorter end and is focused on the specific skills and experiences a person has concerning the particular application.

Targeted resumes are very direct by design. This in itself is neither a good thing nor a bad thing. If you are a strong fit for the application and can back this up with skills and experience this can be a strong asset. In the same breath, if you are missing any requirements it will be very apparent.

Understanding the type of position that you are applying for is critical before choosing to go with the Targeted resume. Unlike the other two types, Chronological and Functional, you are calling out everything that you have to offer for this precise application. This makes the hiring manager’s job easier as they do not have to infer skills that you did at the different positions because you are specifically calling them out. Again, this is a double-edged sword; yes, it is easier for the hiring manager to ingest your talents but if you forget to highlight something the hiring manager will never know about it.

Using the Targeted resume style is by far the most complicated of the three resume types. When implemented correctly, that Targeted resume can be very effective at demonstrating your best attributes in the most efficient way. When used incorrectly, the Targeted resume can leave gaps and more work for the hiring manager, which we never want to do.
