Applying for a new position can be an exciting and terrifying time. Due to this energy, often people rush out their application. This can leave you at a terrible disadvantage compared to other applicants who spent the time to craft a personal application. Furthermore, it is better to take a step back and prepare even before working on the specific application.
To begin, you need to have a strong understanding of your industry. Understanding the demands for the field can help when trying to build out a tailored cover letter or resume. You may also learn that your skills may actually be better suited for a different role in the same field, helping you determine the best positions to focus on.
You should also take the time to understand how you currently appear online. This can give you a sense of how the hiring manager will see you. Many of us have a deep history online and it is critical that we give off the impression that we are a valuable team member for any organization we want to join.
Not only should you be considering your online presence but also your offline presence. Ensuring everything that is linked to you is reflective of the vision you are trying to portray. Having a focused vision will let others know exactly what you are about in the most efficient way possible.
You will also want to take time to also see how you can stand out from your competitors. This could mean certifications, accredited training, portfolios, or special events that are meaningful for your industry. Remember, you are not the only one looking for the position so ensure you push a little further than the rest to ensure that you will stand in front of the pack.
Lastly, don't underestimate your social network. Often positions are filled based on who you know rather than what you know. This is why it is important to keep in touch with colleagues and friends. Don't be afraid to reach out regularly so that you can stay top of mind.
These are, at a high level, some of the activities you should be focusing on even before you begin tailoring your application. Due to their importance we will be doing a series to help flush out each of these areas to help in your endeavors.
